If reports from Gizmodo are true, Apple and AT&T are in talks to offer a “data tethering” plan so that users will be able to pair their laptops with their iPhone 3Gs to surf the web.
Previously there was an application in the AppStore called NetShare that allowed this feature however it has since been pulled off the virtual AppStore shelves or so to say.
The only confirmation so far that this is in the works is a so-called email response from Apple CEO Steve Jobs to one frustrated user. The email goes as follows:
AT&T offers data plans for BlackBerry that include tethering for an additional per month (a total of per month for the BlackBerry+tethering plan).
It seems ludicrous that the same thing is not offered with the iPhone. I understand the desire to prevent tethering with the current data plan, but I am willing to pay more money to allow tethering! With such an advanced device, why can I not do so?
Steve’s alleged response was:
We agree, and are discussing it with ATT.
Steve

I really hope AT&T open up the iphone to tethering. I still use the original Edge version of the phone, but I would still be willing to tether using that connection. This is one feature that I sadly left behind when I moved up from a Samsung Blackjack.
