The iPhone 3G - Why is it So Special?

iPod News Add comments

The Apple iPhone 3G is now here. The Third-Generation mobile technology (3G) is essentially a wide-area wireless system that has improved performance over the older AT&T EDGE network. With the first iPhone, you could either surf the Internet or talk, but with its 2G connection you couldn’t do both tasks at once. Now with the 3G technology, you can talk as well as surf the web at the same time. Data transmission with the 3G technology is much faster than the older 2G system. Apple claims that the 3G iPhone speeds are much faster than its rivals, the Nokia N95 and Treo 750. The newer 3G iPhone comes with other features as well. There is a selection of applications from the iPhone App Store and access to the Microsoft Exchange server email.

What else is new with the latest release iPhone? The volume is noticeably louder and the Apple engineers have reduced the volume background noise that was annoying in the original iPhone. The video and music quality is unchanged, but that is okay as it was pretty good to start out with. The call quality has improved, though, with the 3G set. The set itself has had a few minor adjustments. The back is now all plastic and there is a flush headphone jack. Some iPhone users have commentated that they prefer the original design with its slightly thicker edges. The battery can cope with 5 hours of talking on the 3G network and has 300 hours of standby power.

Sadly, the AT&T contract costs have increased, probably because of AT&T’s claim that the new iPhone will have download speeds as much as 1.4 Mbps, compared to 135 Kbps on its older EDGE network. AT&T provides 3G coverage in 280 USA metropolitan areas and this will increase to about 350 areas by the end of 2008. To cheer you up, though, did you know that you can get low-cost downloads for your iPhone? I have turned my iPhone into a media center and I regularly download music, games and movies, for very little expense.
